Mike Pratt is the Managing Director of BioForest, based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. BioForest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lallemand Plant Care (LPC), and is the lead entity in managing the LPC Forestry group. Mike oversees sales, marketing, production and logistics, customer support and finance. In addition to this, he is responsible for the general oversight and strategic direction of LPC Forestry, and is managing its European commercial operations, which is based in Espoo, Finland. During his time with BioForest, the company has increased from nine to 28 staff, expanded to selling in over a dozen US states (prior sales were only in Canada), significantly increased its investment in reseach and development, completed its sale to LPC, and undertaken the global management of the forestry portfolio for LPC. Mike has recently taken on the commercial director role for LPC’s North American speciality agriculture business. Mike is part of a passionate technical and commercial team, which is comprised of over 70% young professionals, who collectively have become established as leaders in forest pest management in Canada; this award is reflective of the entire team’s accomplishments.
Prior to joining BioForest, Mike worked in the not-for-profit sector with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre as its Business Development Manager, where he was responsible for fostering the growth of new businesses in the science and technology sector in the Algoma region. During that time, he worked with over 70 companies of varying stages of development, assisting in a variety of advisory functions including IP management, strategic planning, market development, human resources and others. He was the lead on several successful funding proposals, both for client companies as well as the Innovation Centre itself. Prior to this, Mike worked for a management consulting company, a technology development company, and for OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming). Mike holds an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Laurentian University (Algoma campus), with specializations in Marketing and Accounting.
In addition to his professional activities, Mike has served on a number of boards and committees. He serves as Governor of the Sault Sabercats, an under-19 “rep” football team which competes in the Ontario Football Conference. He is a board member of the Invasive Species Centre, a non-profit, non-governmental organization that connects stakeholders, knowledge, and technology to prevent and reduce the spread of invasive species that harm Canada’s environment, economy and society. In the past, he served as a board member of the Algoma Workforce Investment Corporation, a not-for-profit which addresses labour force development issues in the Algoma District. Mike was the founding Vice Chair of STRIVE Young Professional Group, a fledgling group in Sault Ste. Marie focused on connecting and developing young professionals in the area.
